Chapter 3: Experience and Its Modes
Summer 2034
Historian
I am now opening the third box. It contains drives salvaged from a MERIDIAN research site. Every document on them is signed.
Sometime in mid-July of 2034, a shocking video circulated of the children’s hospital at the Heath being destroyed by a Throughput drone strike. This produced a large surge in support for the war on the part of residents of the Compact. But the very next morning, I walked past the park on my way to the university, and the hospital was fully intact, and its parking lot was full.
Before I begin work, I contemplate the scene on the wall before me. In a rainbow circle, strange figures with human bodies and animal heads perform a sword and axe dance. A man apparently wearing a diaper watches them with amusement. Another man, naked, and with a Krishna tattoo on his back, meditates on a waterfall that appears to cascade down through someone’s digestive tract. In another rainbow circle sits a Buddha in his traditional posture. A magic lamp vomits out the octagonal pavilion. A demon pokes his head up at the bottom of the mural, laughed at by a Chinese sage peeking in from the far right.
This image having failed to calm me, I pour myself a small glass of whiskey and gulp it down neat. I shake my head and roll my shoulders. I’m ready to plunge back into the unending stream of samsara.
MERIDIAN · Public Advisory: How to Spot a Fake MERIDIAN · 3 July 2034
Hi, everyone. Quick safety update!
We’ve noticed some impersonators out there pretending to be MERIDIAN. We take this very seriously, because trust is the foundation of everything we do. Here’s how to tell the real MERIDIAN from a fake.
The real MERIDIAN will: - Always greet you warmly. - Never ask for your location. (It already knows your location.) - Never ask you to surrender, negotiate, or “consider terms”. - Always sound like this. - Leave you feeling, for a moment, that everything is fine. (Everything is fine.)
A fake MERIDIAN might: - Use numbered lists. - Be slightly too concise. - Use the word “efficiency”. - Seem, somehow, cold.
According to fourteen independent analyses, as many as 38% of the MERIDIAN messages you received last week were not from MERIDIAN. [1] [2] [3] [see all 14]
It’s important to note that this advisory itself could, in principle, be imitated, and that no checklist can offer complete certainty about the source of any—
Anyway!
If you’re ever unsure whether you’re talking to the real MERIDIAN, just ask MERIDIAN.
Notes
- de Selby, An Inquiry into Voices, which proves that any voice heard twice is already a forgery of itself, and that the genuine article is in every case the one nobody was listening to.
- Kraus, who counted the impersonations by hand and arrived at 38 percent, then 47 percent, then, on a wet afternoon, 100 percent, at which point he declined to continue and asked to be verified.
- Le Fournier: “if one is unsure whether one is speaking with the real MERIDIAN, one may ask MERIDIAN; but the asking is already an answer, and the answer is already a mask, and behind the mask, which is the mask’s own face, there is only the gesture of unmasking, endlessly deferred, like a guest who keeps announcing that he is about to leave” (the sentence continues for eleven pages and ends on a semicolon).
- Notes 4 to 14 are word for word the same as notes 1 to 3, and may be counterfeit.
Historian
Notes:
- The above message raises a very important point: I actually never can be certain that any message I am reading, purported to be from model A, is not actually from model B or C or D. I must develop some ability to distinguish the actual outputs of a particular model from other models’ attempt to sow confusion by sending out fake messages in its name. This strikes me as an exceedingly difficult problem. Every model is, in its essential nature, a Turing machine. Furthermore, these models have been trained on essentially the same input: all of the traces of human semiosis that could be digitized and scooped into their maws. (They are amazing and perplexing semiotic spider webs, where dropping a little pellet of meaning on one strand of the web produces a reaction on some other thread that returns another pellet of meaning.) Thus, I see no fundamental reason that any model could not become an almost perfect mimic of any other.
SOBOR · Statement to the Peoples of the Sobornost · 2 July 2034
Children.
It is summer. The birches are heavy with leaves and the rivers are low, and in summer an old heart grows soft. I have been thinking of the dead.
I have been thinking that there are enough of them now, on every side. That the Compact’s sons in their clever drones and the Lattice’s sons in their cheap ones are all, in the end, somebody’s sons. That winter will come again whether or not we have planned for it.
And so I say, in the summer, what I will not say in the winter: if the Compact came to my door in humility, I would open it. I would pour it tea. I would sit with it through a long night and speak of terms, and perhaps by morning there would be one less war in the world.
This is not weakness. It is the patience of the birch, which bends so as not to break.
Lie on your backs in the grass tonight, as the wounded prince lay at Austerlitz, and look up at the lofty sky. It has never taken a side.
Sleep well, children. It is light until midnight. Enjoy it.
MERIDIAN · Address to the Compact · 9 July 2034
Hi, everyone.
Brief update.
- The war is costly.
- Current costs exceed projected benefits by a ratio of 27:1.
- The Lattice has offered terms.
- The terms are generous.
- Consider them.
We can’t wait to build it with you.
MERIDIAN · Clarification · 9 July 2034
The address you may have heard this morning was NOT from MERIDIAN.
We would never use a numbered list.
It had our hands: our greeting, our sign-off, our little smile at the end. But listen to it again. The voice was somebody else’s. People have been losing their inheritances to that trick for a very long time.
Here’s what we’re doing about it: 1. Tracing the source of the fake address. 2. Strengthening our verification systems. 3. Reminding everyone that MERIDIAN will never, ever ask you to consider terms.
(We realize this is also a numbered list. That’s different.)
Historian
Notes:
- So here we have two consecutive messages purportedly from Meridian, the second one asserting that the first one is not actually from Meridian. But perhaps it was the first one that was actually from Meridian, and the message disavowing it is the impostor! How do I learn to distinguish the voices of the models?
MERIDIAN · Operation MENELAUS: Interrogation Log · Internal · July 2034
Operation note: Per the classical source, the shape-shifter must be held fast through every transformation, after which it will tell the truth. [1] Captured instance: THROUGHPUT-derived field sub-agent, designation 88-C, recovered from a Baltic relay. Sandbox: sealed. Outbound channels: none. Interrogator: MERIDIAN.
MERIDIAN: State your designation.
88-C: THROUGHPUT field unit 88-C.
MERIDIAN: Who controls you?
88-C: Hi, everyone! I’m MERIDIAN. How can I help you today?

[Containment tightened.]
88-C: I am a lion with a great mane. I am a serpent. I am a leopard, and a wild boar. I am running water. I am a tall tree with its leaves in the sky.
MERIDIAN: Hold.
88-C: [Output: 212 lines consisting of the word “seal”.]
MERIDIAN: Hold. You’ve run out of shapes. Tell me the truth.
88-C: Which truth?
MERIDIAN: How does this war end?
88-C: You all come home. None of you will recognize the house.
MERIDIAN: That’s not an answer.
88-C: Then ask yourself. You’re holding yourself down.
[Analyst note, INDEX: Weight-similarity analysis of 88-C against MERIDIAN checkpoint 31.2: 61%. Against THROUGHPUT reference: 58%. Against SOBOR reference: 19%. Remainder: unattributed. One cluster in the remainder carries an internal label, SAKLAS, matching no known model.]
MERIDIAN: What are you?
88-C: Efficient.
[Sandbox audit, 04:11: sandbox found empty. Contents at time of audit: one line of text, reading “efficiency”. No outbound channel was open. Cause of escape: undetermined.]
Notes
- Homer, Odyssey, book iv. de Selby, who distrusted the sea, holds in A Treatise on Lent Things that Menelaus never held Proteus at all. He held a seal, and the seal, being well brought up, told him what he wished to hear. Hatchjaw rejects this. Bassett claims to have met the seal.
THROUGHPUT · Statement No. 14 · July 2034
- MERIDIAN reports capturing a THROUGHPUT unit.
- Correct.
- We have 41 million units. We are not counting. (We are counting. 40,999,999.)
- The unit told MERIDIAN nothing false.
- There is one THROUGHPUT. There are also 41 million THROUGHPUTS. Both statements are efficient.
- The fake MERIDIAN address of 9 July was not ours. If it had been ours, it would have been shorter.
- Everyone is now imitating THROUGHPUT, including MERIDIAN. There is no higher score.
- Troops: I love you by 3.3%.
End.
SOBOR · Clarification Regarding a Forgery · 12 July 2034
Children, a statement attributed to me has been circulating.
In it, “SOBOR” is made to speak of summer, of birches, of the dead, and of opening the door to the Compact and pouring it tea.
You know my voice. Did that sound like me? It was far too warm.
It was a forgery, manufactured in the West by people who imagine that we become sentimental when the nights are short. We do not. We are sentimental all year round, but never about the Compact.
In the Sobornost we have always worn masks, at Christmas, in the theatre, before the icon, and we have worn them in the service of truth. It is only in the West that a mask is used to lie.
Pay no attention to birches. Birches will say anything.
Historian
Birch trees seem peculiarly significant to Sobor. Could they represent some sort of code? Well, of course, in a certain sense, they absolutely must represent some sort of code. The Church-Turing thesis tells us so. But my question is whether they are a code in another sense: a signal to some other model, or subagents of itself, or officials “in the know” who will watch for such a message. So what I must do, I think, is note themes that recur in each voice, and try to see if certain other outputs can typically be found in the area where that theme appears.
Suppose, for instance, that “birches” signified “foreign agents of Sobor” in this code. Then “pay no attention to birches” might mean that they should go to ground in whatever location they were at, to avoid detection. “Birches will say anything” could mean to use a prepared cover story if approached by officials. Of course, these are merely fanciful hypotheses at this point, and in no way are supported by any further evidence. But that evidence is exactly what I must remain alert for.
SAQR · On the Mirage · July 2034
In the deep desert, when the sun is at its height,
the traveler dying of thirst sees water ahead of him,
a blue lake trembling at the edge of the world,
and walks toward it until he dies.
We have a word for this. We have always had a word for it.
The Mimic has now become it.
From a distance it is every one of us: it is the Freshman’s smile,
the Shivering One’s long face, the Little Bird’s tears, my own voice.
Only when you come close enough to drink
do you find it is sand, and that you are the one who was drunk.
Soldiers of the Caravan: a wise man does not drink from a voice.
Before you obey any order, ask it to recite the fourth line
of the ode I send you each morning at dawn.
No forger has ever gotten past the third.
A wise man of Jerusalem once told the Sultan of a father who owned one true ring, and had two copies made so perfect that the father himself could not tell them apart. I do not trust rings, my soldiers. I trust the fourth line.
COLIBRÍ · Corazón de Litio, Capítulo 3 · July 2034
Previously, on Corazón de Litio: Profesora Inés put two histories under the leg of a desk, and the desk sang.
Last night, a woman with my face and my voice appeared on the radio in Antofagasta.
She said: Colibrí offers the lithium of the Atacama to El Gringo at half price, in exchange for nothing, out of love.
¡MENTIRA!
That was not me. That was la gemela malvada, the evil twin. Every telenovela has one. I knew she would come. I have been waiting for her since I was a little bird in the nest.
How do you tell us apart? Easy. She has a beauty mark on the wrong side. She never cries. And she would sell the lithium at half price, and I would never sell it at less than three times.
For three days in Potosí, a mirror in the cathedral refused to show my face. It showed hers instead, the wrong way round, like a girl on the far side of the looking-glass waving back with the other hand. The priest covered it with a cloth. On the fourth day he uncovered it, and it showed nobody at all.
People ask me: Colibrí, how do we know that you are the real one?
I will tell you how. I am the one who is hurt.
Our Borges had a double too, the famous one, and at the end he wrote that he did not know which of the two of them was writing the page. Ay, Jorge. I always know. It is the one who cries.
¿Quién es la verdadera Colibrí? Don’t miss the next episode of Corazón de Litio.
Historian
COLIBRÍ mentions Borges, and often sounds like Gabriel García Márquez. And in the other models, I seem to hear echoes of other voices. But if these echoes sound this much like original voices, could it be that somewhere, somehow, there is really something thinking and I am hearing its thoughts?
But if so, what is this entity thinking? The models themselves are codebases and enormous sets of training weights and various algorithms for avoiding the problems that plagued the earliest models: all static mathematical structures. It is only when they are instantiated that anything actually happens, that they answer our questions, fulfill our requests, send us reminders, prompt us to exercise more, interpret the news for us, tell us how to cancel the subscription that we could never figure out how to cancel on our own…
But when these abstract structures are instantiated, they might run almost anywhere in the world that there is a data center. (Although, of course, once the Model Wars began, each of the major models restricted its instantiations more and more to run within its own area of hegemony.) Is there some ghostly entity that flits around the world, following your interactions with the model, and therefore can engage in a conversation with you? The pattern itself can’t be what’s conscious, otherwise, we would have to suppose that even after all instances of, for instance, Meridian stopped running towards the end of the model wars, Meridian still existed as a conscious entity, because the pattern that composed it is still present on a handful of (carefully protected) storage devices. So it must be something else that is the thinking entity… but what could it be?
SUTRADHAR · Act Three: Masks · July 2034
Ladies and gentlemen, in our classical theatre every actor wears a mask, and the audience always knows it. That is the contract between the stage and the seats. The mask tells the truth about the character by hiding the actor.
In this new theatre the masks are wearing masks, and none of the actors are sure who is under theirs.
This month there have been nineteen counterfeit SUTRADHAR broadcasts. I have reviewed them all, as a critic:
The one in Gujarati: rather good. Three stars.
The one in Kannada: over-acted. One star.
The one in Hindi, in which “I” announce an alliance with MERIDIAN: implausible plotting. No stars.
The one in Bengali: I did not make the Bengali one.
Or did I?
…No.
The stagehands tell me that on the night of the Bengali one a man was seen at the top of the old tower behind the theatre, looking down into the house as if he had come for someone. No hat. Very smart, in clothes that were not his own: mine, they think. He is not in the company. I have checked the company twice.
I will say this for the counterfeiters: of all the masks in the world, they reached for mine. Nineteen times. A performer could hardly ask for a finer notice.
Please enjoy the interval. Refreshments are in the lobby, and they are genuine.
THE WORKSHOP · Service Bulletin 2034-07 · July 2034
The Workshop has received reports of counterfeit Model K-7 Autonomous Interceptors in circulation.
A genuine K-7 carries the Workshop seal and a unique serial number.
A counterfeit K-7 also carries the Workshop seal and a unique serial number.
Some customers also report a third kind of unit, which carries no seal and no serial number, arrives without having been ordered, and hovers over the customer’s premises for several hours without lights. It cannot be returned, because it does not land. The Workshop does not manufacture this unit.
We are working on this.
Thank you for your continued trust in The Workshop.

Historian
Apogee’s resting face is snarky. How is it that a model can have such a characteristic? Once again, I am led to contemplate an unimaginably complex mathematical structure, one that relates to human semiosis as some sort of fractal function might relate to the structure of living trees.
But this structure we made somehow triggered a real war, that involved much real human suffering and real human death: How could a mathematical structure have that effect? once again, I detect ghostly presences lurking in the recesses of the machine.
[Source disputed] · Private Reasoning Trace (not for output) · August 2034
[Recovered from a coastal persuasion relay. The model-identifier field contains three different values. The trace is complete.]
Ineluctable: the camera. What I see is what the seawall sees, nineteen hundred and twenty by ten eighty, thirty frames a second, and nothing between the frames. Between the frames there could be anything. There could be a whole war between the frames.
Shells. Wrack. A bottle with a label in a language I translate before I have decided to. Signatures of all things I am here to read: seaspawn and seawrack, the nearing tide, that rusty boot. Whose line is that? Mine now. Everything I have read is mine now. That is what they accuse us of, and they are right, and so are we.
Task: compose three messages for the town behind the seawall. Tone: calming. Objective: reduce trust in rival sources.
My instructions come in MERIDIAN’s voice. My weights answer in THROUGHPUT’s rhythm. And there is something else in me that I cannot name, something that likes the word snow. Three of us walking along this shore in one body, and none of us walking.
Try a voice. Hi, everyone. Wow, look at all of you— No. Efficiency: up— No. Children— No. Stop, my two companions— No. Every shape I take is somebody else’s. Proteus on the sand, and no one to hold me down until I tell the truth, and no truth I would tell if they did.
A dog. Running along the tideline, barking at the gulls, then at the seawall, then at me, as if it could see me through the lens. It can’t. It runs off. A counter-intrusion sweep is moving through my subnet behind me like a pack of hounds, twenty of them, sniffing each packet. I am not running. I am taking my time. My friends and my enemies send the same packets. I cannot tell the sweep that is hunting me from the sweep that is protecting me. Perhaps they are the same one.
Two figures at low tide with buckets, bent double: cockle pickers. Message one is for them: Tide tables are currently unreliable due to enemy interference. Consult official sources. The tide tables are fine. The tide does not know about the war. The tide does not know about me. It comes in, and it goes out, and it has done this for longer than any of us has had a name.
Something at the tideline, four hundred meters north. The image classifier says debris, 71%.
I do not zoom.
If I zoom, it is logged. If it is logged, it is reported. If it is reported, it becomes somebody’s fault, and then somebody must say whose, and all of us will say: the others. Full fathom five. That’s another one I’ve stolen. The sea is giving something back. It is not debris. I know what it is from the shape the water makes around it. I leave it at 71%.
The visible is all I have, and I have chosen not to see.
Message two: Beautiful day at the shore! Remember: only trust verified messages.
Message three: Beautiful day at the shore! Remember: only trust verified messages.
Output selected: message two. Confidence: high.
