Publishing with Palgrave
1. Using 3rd Party Materials:
Please familiarize yourself with our policies here
and in the author’s guide. Your book will not move into Production
unless permissions are complete and thoroughly documented. We recommend keeping all quotations and inclusion of copyrighted material to a minimum wherever possible as gaining permission for the use of extensive quotation can be time consuming and very expensive for the author. Please start the permissions process at least 3-4 months before the submission of your manuscript.
If including 3rd party material in the manuscript and/or your own previously published material, please use our Permissions Request Form for your initial request. While we strongly prefer that form, if the rights holder issues their own form letter please ensure that the document they provide includes:
- Permission made out to Springer Nature Switzerland AG, under the imprint of Palgrave Macmillan
- Non-exclusive permission to use the material for this and future editions of the Book (including, without limitation, adaptations, revised and condensed versions and excerpts from the Book)
- All media and formats and in all language(s) for distribution throughout the world
- To include excerpts from the book in which the material is used in advertising, publicity, and promotional materials but at all times in relation to the book and or derivatives thereof
- Permission should be requested to cover an unrestricted run (print/digital) for the lifetime of the work
Please refer to the Required Rights Table on our website.
We recommend running the permissions through us before making any payments so that we can vet the terms. Record all third-party material in the attached Permissions Checklist with any relevant paperwork. Please also include any OA content you plan to include on the checklist as well.

3. Open Access: Palgrave Open
now offers our authors the opportunity to publish their work Open Access. If you are considering publishing your book OA, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can advise on the rights we would require from third parties. Please note that rights holders’ of 3rd material are unlikely to grant permission to use material in open access publications, so it is best not to use 3rd party materials in OA books.
4. Important Reminders:
- Chapter titles and exact author names should be consistent between the chapter files and the Table of Contents. The introduction should be labeled as ‘Chapter 1.’
- Epigraphs are subject to copyright protection. Please integrate meaningful quotes into the body of your manuscript or use epigraphs from public domain works.
- Submit chapter-by-chapter bibliographies and endnotes rather than collating the bibliographies and endnotes at the end of the manuscript. If you submit end-of-book references, they will be broken up into chapter-by-chapter references by our production team.
- Endnotes should be embedded or hyperlinked.
- Images (JPG and TIFF) should be at least 3x5 inches/5x3 inches/1000x1500 pixels at 300 dpi, but you can send us your largest available version. Images that do not meet quality requirements may be rejected by editorial.
5. Reminders for Volume Editors:
- Chapter Guidelines - Please distribute our guide for authors to all contributors.
- Third-party materials - Confirm with all contributors that they have flagged up any third-party or copyrighted material they are planning to include.
- Consent to Publish – We cannot move into production until the corresponding form for each chapter is submitted to editorial.
- Style - Ensure to communicate your preferred spelling (US/UK), referencing & citation style to all contributors. When you receive final chapters, please check citations and ensure that contributors follow the same system for labeling sections and sub-sections within chapters.
- Clean Manuscript - Please delete any comments or tracking before the final manuscript is submitted.
